Heres a beautiful winter solstice meditation. It’s for the winter solstice, the longest night of the year or anytime in winter when its cold and when the sun is low in the sky and the nights are long. Use this sunshine meditation to remind you of summer and to bring warmth to your heart.
Winter Solstice Meditation Sunshine
Lie back and relax. Feel your breath flowing slowly in and out and close your eyes.
At this time of year, we miss the sunshine. It is cold and dark and dismal and we await the brighter days and the return of the sun.
In your mind’s eye imagine it’s summer again and you are lying in a bright sunny spot. It is secluded and you know you won’t be disturbed, you feel safe and warm.
You sink back and relax even more and you feel the sun’s rays surround you. Breath in, the sun warms you but doesn’t burn your skin.
Feel the sunshine fill your lungs and your heart. The sun softens and warms every muscle, joint and bone. It warms your toes, your feet, your legs, your body your fingers, your arms, your neck and head. It warms you all over and you are entirely filled with sunshine.
You feel joy and contentment. The sun makes us well and it makes us feel good. Imaging that feeling now. Let your heart fill with brightness, warmth, love, peace and happiness.
Think of those you love and allow the sunshine to expand to the favourite people in your life. Your friends and family. All those who you care for. Cover them with the sunshine that is in your heart. Let them too feel the warms of the suns rays and the brightness, peace and happiness.
Now open your heart even more and think of anyone you know who is struggling in some way. Shine the sun from your heart on these people and let them feel the brightness, warmth, love, peace and happiness too.
Finally, open your heart to its maximum potential and shine the sun on anyone who you struggle with. Wish them well, wish them warmth and wish them sunshine. There is enough sunshine to share with everyone.
Come back and focus again on your own body and feel the sunshine on your skin once again.
Take a few long slow deep breaths on your own. Invite the sun to stay in your heart as you gradually waken. Take the sun with you and feel brightness, warmth, love, peace and happiness once again.
Wriggle your fingers, wriggle your toes. Left your arms overhead and stretch. Press out through your heels. Gradually bring yourself back to normal.
I hope you enjoyed this Winter Solstice Meditation, If so please pop back soon as I’m hoping to share more meditations in the future. Meditation is such an important part of yoga and we can even just do a meditation without the poses if we are particularly stressed or short on time.
Are you intending to celebrate the Solstice? It would be following a very ancient tradition to do so. I like the idea of combining the ancient Indian practice of yoga with our own ancient traditions. We then have the best of both worlds. Personally, Im going to practice Sun Salutations and then this meditation as I think they will be the perfect way to let the sun know that we want to see it back high in the sky very soon.
As always it would be great to hear from you below or shout out to me on Twitter – I will reply
